By Justin Kalm, Orca PTSA Legislative Chair

As Orca PTSA’s legislative/advocacy chair, one of my most important jobs is helping you to take advantage of the many ways that you can advocate for children. One of the easiest ways is to join the Orca PTSA. When you join online at https://www.pt-avenue.com/join/, you help sustain the ranks of state’s largest child welfare organization and non-profit volunteer organization. When the Washington State PTA speaks, it speaks with one voice, but with the power of over 130,000 voices, and policy makers take heed.

The annual membership dues for Orca PTSA are just $12 per person, or $20 for two people. If you don’t have that money right now, Orca PTSA can help you. No one should be kept from being a PTSA member just because they can’t afford the dues.

Another way to advocate for children, albeit one with a larger time commitment attached, is to apply to serve on the Seattle Public Schools Building Excellence (BEX) and Buildings, Technology and Academics (BTA) Capital Programs Oversight Committee. This committee, meeting monthly, oversees the planning and implementation of the capital levies and makes recommendations concerning, progress of the BEX and BTA capital programs. Meetings usually take place from 8:30 a.m. to 10:30 a.m. on the second Friday of every month during the school year. If you have the time to serve, you could have a major influence on how the district spends these precious levy dollars. To apply, visit https://bit.ly/2J1Y8Df. Applications are due no later than October 24, 2018.

    Why join?

    1. To help decide how the Orca K-8 PTSA utilizes funds to support our school. The PTSA funds our garden program, Seward Audubon environmental science partnership, Bridging Wisdom, We-App, tutoring, Team Read, teacher supplies, PTSA communications, community-building school events and more.

    2. To demonstrate a strong united presence when advocating on behalf of our students. Dues support national, state and city educational advocacy. This means that the more members we have, the more impact we have when influencing educational policy.

    3. For the perks! PTSA members get discounts to all sorts of places including Fed Ex and Great Wolf Lodge (full list at www.pt-avenue.com/join).
