    Orca Band

    Orca Band began 6 years ago as an enrichment class that met 3 times a week. There were 15 middle school students who participated. Since then, the band has grown to include two classes that meet every day with a total of 79 middle school students participating. The band has participated in district concert and jazz band festivals, has collaborated with Orca’s Drama Program to present Star Wars: Execute 66, and has been instrumental (ha!) in the development and piloting of Seattle Public Schools' new Cornerstone Assessment for Secondary Music: Ensemble-Based Classes. Orca’s band program has become the model for implementation at all K-8 schools in Seattle Public Schools.

    Orca K-8’s Elementary Instrumental Music program is also unique in the district, in that students receive 40 minutes of instruction twice per week as part of their PCP rotation. (The district model is a 30 minutes, once-a-week pull-out program.) This program has grown as well, from 22 students in 2007 to 63 students today.
