The best way to learn math is to talk about math!

Getting the right answer is important, but it’s just as important to think and explain your ideas.

What are we learning in math?

Every grade at Orca uses the enVision curriculum. Choose your child’s grade level to see what they’re learning this year and how you can help! If your teacher uses the Savvas practice pages, the you can scan them with Bounce Pages for more information.

How can we practice math at home?

Let’s Play Math has games for all ages using cards, dice, paper and pencil.

Kindergarten through 2nd grade:

  • The best things you can do are to count together and look for patterns. Play “Most Wins” (like War) or “Least Wins” with a deck of cards to practice comparing numbers.
  • SplashLearn games are free and provide simple skills practice, but they do require a sign-up.
  • Math Lines Addition is a great way to practice addition and subtraction facts. Spend extra time making tens!
  • Sheppard Software’s Fruit Splat and other counting, addition and subtraction games can be played in timed or untimed modes. We want students to become fluent and confident in their math facts, but speed is not the goal.

Grades 3-5

Grades 6-8

  • Many of the resources for grades 3-5 are also helpful for older students. If you know multiplication and division, then it’s much easier to work with fractions and factor expressions. Students should also use SuccessMaker, which they access through their Savvas accounts.
  • Khan Academy has clear explanation videos and practice problems on any math topic. Use the Savvas work to find the right level for you! Many students have their own accounts that they also use to practice class material. If not, you can make a free account to track progress.
  • Math Snacks has free practice games for more advanced concepts such as graphing lines or solving equations. You can even play in Spanish!

Mathematics

The Orca staff believe that the mastery of mathematics concepts and skills comes with connecting our classroom math activities with students’ lives. In addition, mastery requires repeated exposure and practice, not just one lesson. The Orca staff draws these parallels to life while using Everyday Math for K-5, CMP2 for 6-7th, and Pre-Algebra for 8th grade.

  • Based on research about how children learn and develop mathematical understanding
  • Provides the broad mathematical background needed in the 21st century

In Everyday Math you can expect to see…

  • a problem-solving approach based on everyday situations
  • an instructional approach that revisits concepts regularly
  • frequent practice of basic skills, often through games
  • lessons based on activities and discussion, not a textbook
  • math content that goes beyond basic arithmetic

Seattle Public Schools Elementary Math Page

CMP2

In 2005, Seattle Public Schools adopted CMP2 as its core curricular material for middle school mathematics.  CMP2 texts are divided into units, and students use/take home only one unit at a time.  Each chapter of the book is divided into investigations which are numbered 1, 2, 3, etc.  At the end of each investigation is an ACE (Applications, Connections, Extensions) section and a set of problems, from which homework is generally assigned.  Generally, red books are for 6th grade and blue books for 7th grade, although some books have been moved to address specific state standards for each grade.
